Madeleine and Chris

Seattle, Washington

ABOUT THE BRIDE: Madeleine grew up in Seattle and moved to Austin just after college to pursue a career in Theatre. We both moved back to Seattle in 2001 to be closer to Madeleine's family and because we liked the city/nature vibe and theatre community. Madeleine is currently working in stage management (live theatre, opera, rock concerts, festivals, etc.) and wardrobe (dressing principal artist). Last year we bought a beautiful little house in Ballard (Seattle neighborhood North of Downtown). She enjoys scrapbooking, coffee with friends, Mariners and Seahawks games (all of them, not just the winning ones), and working on her house.

ABOUT THE GROOM: Chris grew up all over the East Coast. Chris' father was a carpenter and they moved to where the work was hot. He graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a bachelor's degree in Industrial Design and eventually ended up in St. Louis as a graphic designer for Anheuser Busch. He moved to Austin on an instinct (just two months after Madeleine moved to Austin). Chris is now an Operations Manager at a large theatre in Seattle. He enjoys martial arts flicks, Rat City roller derby bouts, and good food and wine with friends.

HOW WE MET: We met at the Paramount Theatre in Austin, Texas where Chris was the Production Manager and Madeleine worked in the Box Office during the day and Stage Managed at night. Madeleine's boss, Dianna, pulled Chris into her office one day and told him to either ask Madeleine out or get out of the box office, because he was disrupting business. Obviously, he chose the former.

ENGAGEMENT: After 7 years of dating seriously, there was no big proposal. One day we both looked at each other and said "it's time".

PLANNING: We planned everything together -- 50/50. We wanted every choice to be intentional and with meaning -- not just for looks or show or because "that's the way it's supposed to be done". It was a lot of work, but in the end, it was worth it. Every part of the ceremony and reception was about us, our family, and our friends. It was very, very personal.

ATTIRE: Chris and his brother (best man) wore suits. Madeleine and her sister (maid of honor), wore 1950's-inspired, custom-made dresses. Madeleine's was designed and constructed by her friend and boss, Ron Erickson (a local costume designer). Laura's was made in New York.

CEREMONY: The ceremony and reception were both held at The Top of the Market on the second floor of the Pike Place Market in Seattle. Our dear friend, Jay Rozendaal, performed the Episcopal ceremony. Madeleine is Episcopalian and Chris is Wiccan. Jay was so understanding of our interfaith relationship and encouraged us to include as many traditions of both as well as personal stories from our lives. Our friend Greg Fulton played traditional Spanish songs on the classical guitar.

RECEPTION: Being both half Hispanic we decided to incorporate our heritage in the reception. The food was Latin American-inspired (empanadas, jicama salad, chicken escabeche, plantains, etc.) and we had a local salsa band, Mango Son, play the reception. We only had 50 guests and almost everyone knew each other, so it ended up being a very intimate, really fun party!

VENDORS WE USED: We LOVED our Photographer, Sheila Addleman. Not only did she make us feel at ease, the photos came out fantastic! The caterer, Jewel Catering, came with our venue, Top of the Market. The food was good, but the venue management was a little hard to work with. Our beautiful and tasty cake came from Macrina Bakery. We did all of the flowers ourselves (purchased gerbera daisies from Trader Joe's). Greg Fulton (classical guitar) played the ceremony, Mango Son played the reception. We made the invitations, programs, seating chart, guest book, and favors (hand-made soap) ourselves.
